Are you a dragon? I think I might be…
Stuff in my space impacts me, like a lot, but simultaneously having stuff put away bothers me. Every single day I create nests, I like to have everything I am going to ever need for the day all out and around me…
When things are put away, I forget they exist, out of site out of mind you know.
These are the things I am struggling to change because I know that the saying…everything in its place and a place for everything…is a thing for a reason. I lose things all the time, I never know where half my stuff is. This habit of nesting and needing to see everything means that my house gets cluttered, sometimes within minutes of me decluttering. It means that instead of having organizational systems in place, I shove and hide things.
I also like to hoard things like a dragon. Books,tea/tea cups, notebooks, blankets, and soft things! I have a lot of these things, far more than I need, and I like to have them out. It is not unusual for me to find piles of books around the house and blankets spilling out everywhere. I am having to invent places for the things I like to hoard and I know logically this is not a sustainable habit.
I have really severe anxiety,I literally can’t focus or ground with clutter…I also really enjoy how cleaning makes me feel. I make cleaning magical, it’s a part of my daily routine! I have cleaned homes professionally. I have had therapists tell me that one of their couple therapy hacks is to tell their clients to hire a house cleaner. I know and love the benefits involved with a clean, tidy, and organized home…it is literally the foundation to all magic making!
- So, do I have a Jeckyl and Hyde thing going on?
- Do I like to just be complicated and nonsensical?
- Is something wrong with me?
No!
Neuroscientists have literally documented that it is a very human thing to seem lazy, that we are hardwired to do the easy thing. We have to work really hard to not just sit in a pile of soft and watch hours of netflix. My dragon tendencies are my human genetics keeping comfortable and feeling safe. I like to think that my anxiety is another built in amazing human thing, it’s my body’s alarm system that tells me I need to do the things or that something isn’t right. I have more anxiety than most, because I am really sensitive to energy. I like to think that my higher self is calling me to action when I start to feel anxious and it is up to me to respond. Anyone with anxiety of course knows that this call to action isn’t always easy to comply with, but remembering that you hold the power to get off that anxiety loop with action is the key! One of the responses is to acknowledge the impact my space is having on me, to incorporate magical cleaning rituals into my daily life. My higher self knows that cleansing and clearing my space allows me to better focus, manifest, and make magic! Avoiding anxiety is ofcourse ideal which when getting in touch with the energy of your home really matters, creating new rituals and looking at which ones you need to release.
Maybe you are just now getting to work from home or spending more time in your home than normal and able to acknowledge some of your own dragon tendencies. Those of us who are home tend to be more self aware of these habits, which is why with everyone self quarantining I thought this was a perfect time to talk dragons in the home!
If you think you might be a dragon…here are some tips for you
- Clean and clear surface spaces regularly, do this 2-3 times daily if you have to. I will clutter a space up within minutes of decluttering, so making a ritual of doing this a few times daily works great.
- Light a candle, incense, or smudge your space daily. This often signals us to focus and clean up, we don’t want energy to get trapped, we want it to flow freely.
- Start small, make one change to your daily routine and go from there. Your daily rituals are the key to your success and magic making.
- Limit the amount of your hoard. I mentioned books, tea, and blankets being a few items I keep around all of the time. Limiting these items is really important. Creating rules like no more than 3 unread books at a time, once they are read, then I can get more…if I just want to browse, check it out at the library (I also have library limits). Tea is a little more tricky, I have literally ran out of places for it and have stuff that is several years old, so I have banned myself from buying tea until I have gotten rid of half my stock. Look at setting limits that will both help and you are willing to stick to.
- Thank your items and put them away regularly. Stuff can become pretty toxic, there is something to this trend in minimalism. If you don’t want to be a minimalist, love your stuff, give it a home, and put it away anytime you have not used it for more than 15 minutes.
When the dragon is not guarding it’s hoard, it is free to do what it wants. Get in touch with your own inner dragon, set yourself free from your own hoard, and start making some real magic!
